The beaches here are on the Costa de la Luz - the Coast of Light - the western part of the Andalucía coastline. This part of southern Spain faces out towards the Atlantic and is very different from the Mediterranean side of Spain. The sand on the beaches here is considered finer with a more golden colour than beaches of the neighbouring Costa del Sol.
All the beaches on this stretch of coast are within easy driving distance, with the nearest only 10 minutes away. The beaches are uncrowded for most of the year, with July and August being the busiest times, but even then the long stretches of sand offer plenty of space for everyone.
El Palmar BeachA 10 minute drive will take you to the small coastal village of El Palmar, with its long stretches of sandy beach, bars and restaurants, and a few minutes walk along the beach will offer you plenty of space away from anyone. With 12 km of golden sand, a few bars and restaurants and some local housing, this is a glorious unspoilt beach which is excellent for families and popular with surfers. There are many other lovely beaches and coves nearby and all within 30 minutes drive of Vejer de la Frontera.
18 kms from Vejer, Zahara has long been a fishing village with some interesting history attached to it and is now a small holiday resort, with the longest stretch of white sandy beach in this area.
12 kms from Vejer This is a small beach resort, famous for its lovely scenery, cliffs, sandy bays and sheltered water and the reef just off the Los Canos beach is popular for snorkeling and spearfishing.. Visit the lighthouse at Cape Trafalgar where Nelson defeated the French fleet. The beach here is spectacular but there can be strong currents. The better swimming area is in the Los Canos bays.
Los Canos is also famous for the “Playa de las Cortinas” where fresh water falls from the cliffs above. This particular beach is well worth a visit but is not suitable for young children.
13 kms from Vejer, Conil is a lovely small Spanish town with a broad sandy beach stretching for miles in either direction. Once a fishing village it is now becoming a popular holiday resort but is as yet unspoilt and offers many good restaurants and bars.
38 kms from Vejer, the old Moorish town of Tariffa, otherwise known as the ‘windy city’, occupies the most southerly tip of the Iberian peninsular and is one of the world’s major windsurfing sites.
There are many other little bays and beaches, not so easy to find, but well worth the effort!
