Straits of GibraltarThere are endless opportunities for exploring the Costa del la Luz itself but also within easy reach are many other areas in Spain, including the Sierra Mountains, with its many villages and wonderful scenery, the Mediterranean coast of Spain – Estaponia, Marbella and Malaga. A visit to Portugal is another possibility worth considering.

By choosing to stay in Vejer, you have the advantage of experiencing a typical Spanish town with it’s friendly residents, interesting culture and architecture, wonderful views, Fiestas, local bars and excellent restaurants, and yet be within easy reach of lovely beaches, numerous places of interest, sports opportunities and activities.

Cadiz

A unique Andalucian city with a long history going back to Phoenician times and a sophisticated sea port which has been open to outside influences for centuries, making it a cosmopolitan and fun-loving city. Wander around its narrow streets full of 18th century houses and elegant squares, which make a welcome, tranquil resting place by day but come alive in the evening. Visit the Cathedral, Museum and Torre Tavira, the tallest of over 60 watch towers in Cadiz.

Jerez de la Frontera

Sherry cellarJerez is famous for its numerous sherry bodegas but it also boasts Southern Spain’s best zoo and the world famous Equestrian School. The large gypsy population mainly living in the Barrio de Santiago, provides some of the most authentic flamenco in Andalucia and there are also plenty of museums and historical places of interest, all within easy walking distance from the main town square.

Medina Sidonia

An ancient hilltown dominated by the 15th century Iglesia de Santa Maria, built on the site of an old castle, parts of which still survive. The church tower is worth climbing for the impressive views. There is a small square outside the Church with a good restaurant full of farming antiques and a terrace providing lovely views.

Los Canos & Trafalgar Bay

This small beach resort has superb scenery, sandy bays and sheltered water. Also a lively nightspot during the summer months. (See ‘Beaches’)

Barbate

This is a busy tuna fishing town where the food market is one of the most interesting in the area with dozens of varieties of fresh fish, shellfish and fresh vegetables from the surrounding areas being available.

On the other side of the harbour are fabulous cliffs full of nesting birds with a path to the El Pinar Natural Park.

Conil del a Frontera

A pretty white Spanish coastal town, with a fishing industry important since Roman times. The ancient church, convent and various watchtowers are worth a visit. Market on Fridays in the main town.

Zahara de los Atunes

Don Quixote was said to be imprisoned here, Cervantes’ story La Fregone Llustre” (The Illustrious Mop”!) has inspired the names of bars and streets in the village which was also linked with practicing piracy in the Straits of Gibraltar.

These days Zahara has lovely bars and cafes traditionally crafted in wood. Walk up to the lighthouse and enjoy the views extending from Tarifa to Cape Trafalgar and even the magnificent views of the North African Rif mountains.

Chiclana de la Frontera

Now a large town with a variety of shops. Offshore stands the island of Sancti Petri which has a deserted beauty with fine views and on which stands the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules - At low tide you can walk to the island, while at the south west of the town, a road cuts through the pine woods to the Barossa beach with its white sand and calm waters.

Tarifa

Tarifa is the most southern town in Europe with spectacular views of North Africa and the Rif Mountains. The old town has a distinct North African flavour about it with narrow Moorish alleyways leading to mysterious cave-like houses, bars and shops. With its interesting history and reputation of being one of the world’s major windsuring sites, definitely worth a visit.

Arcos de la frontera

55 kms from Vejer is the wonderful ancient white town of Arcos, perched on a steep rock, with wonderful views and interesting history. In the old quarter, walk the maze of narrow streets and visit the 11th Century Castillo and the Iglesia de Santa Maria de la Asuncion, built on the site of a mosque in Gothic Mudejar style.

Gibraltar

Just 90 kms away is the unique island of Gibraltar. Visit the apes, caves and museum and take a cable car for the views. Excellent for English goods and food but take your passport and expect delays at the border.

 

Ronda and Seville

Ronda is 150 kms from Vejer and Seville 180 kms. However, it would be a great pity to miss the fascinating architecture, history and culture these areas have to offer.

Morocco

Moroccan buskers!

Day trips to Morocco are a must – take the hydrofoil from Tarifa and in 35 minutes you will be in Tangiers where a short taxi ride will take you to the souks for a spot of haggling! Then stroll around and take in the moroccan culture and culinary delights.
